Modern Clay is a co-operative clay studio in Birmingham, run by artist members. They produce ceramics, run public workshops and design bespoke projects with charitable organisations. Their approach is open and responsive, and centred around three priorities: Artists – working with artists to support ceramic research and the production of new work; Education –designing workshops and occasional events for the public that give insights into the work of the studio artists and ceramic practices and processes; Outreach – partnering with local charitable organisations supporting vulnerable groups to develop bespoke workshops that share the benefits of working creatively with clay.

How To Form a Form: Tiny Balls

With: Eiair

Time: 10.00 - 13:30

Joining BAB Lab 2022 virtually from Bangkok Eiair shared his process for creating miniature artworks from porcelain and posed the question “Are tiny things valued”? We explored different clay forming techniques inspired by Eiair’s own work an created our own tiny ball-shaped clay units, combining them together, bit by bit, to create a complex molecular-like an organism of multiplying cells.

These miniature creatures represent how fragile and delicate nature is. “When beings find it hard to live among us, I speak out for them through their aesthetic that inspires me. Hopefully, they are then valued.”
